Solving the traveling salesman problem (or rather the traveling geocacher problem) is something geocachers often want to do. And we’ve had automatic sorting for a while now, but it’s been slow and not as easy to use as it should be.

We have talked a lot internally about replacing it with a better tool, and that is exactly what we are testing now.

This is how it works

The new tool is on the exact same spot as the old one used to be.

You simply select the caches in the list above (Mark), and after that there’s just one button to press. It will find the optimal route, and sort the waypoints for you. You just have to press Save. Before you save, you can also do adjustments, or sort other parts of the route, if you want.

Much faster

The calculation is now done server side, and a quick test showed that the calculation time went from 1 minute and 31 seconds, to 1.7 seconds. That’s not too bad, is it?

In addition to the simpler interface and faster operation, this tool should also work better on hiking trails. Something the old tool wasn’t too god at.

Available for a limited time – YOUR ACTION REQUIRED

We are only testing this. We do not yet know how long we can keep this new tool running. If you like what you see, tell us! We are not counting silence as acceptance this time.

Solving the traveling geocacher problem is expensive, also for us. So for us to be able to continue providing this, we need to know that it is both interesting and useful for our users. And we have to see that we can maintain the current income.

Would you rather use the old tool?

No problem! Just follow the link below the new tool 🙂

I am heading to a mega down in Melbourne tomorrow for four days of caching fun. We are finalizing cache lists at the moment so hope to give this a test and let you know.
